past - present

I should be in bed, but I'm kind of keyed up. S is already asleep with it being game day tomorrow, but I am just a little wired. But that could be from the cup of coffee that I just finished.

It's wet, cold and miserable outside, and apparently we can expect hail and 12 degrees tomorrow. Lovely. I think I might stay in and work on the assignment, and readings I should have done yesterday but didn't. I didn't do them today either.

I ended up cleaning today. Vaccumming every inch of the bedroom, reorganising stacks of boxes and generally just not doing too much. It felt good.

Soph, Sarah and I had a girl's night out shopping, and I saw the most gorgeous pair of jeans. I am a self-confessed jeans junkie. We are talking jeans of every size and colour. I am addicted.

Anyway I tried on a size 10 and OMG they were too big for me, so I think I'm going to have to go with a size 8. I was so thrilled to be that tiny, since I didn't think I would ever get that shape. Ha! I should enjoy the tiny waist while it lasts cause pretty soon it will be gone, and be replaced with a thickening waist.

But damn I am happy to be a size 8. Very cool.

We had a lot of fun tonight, and it was a good laugh and something that I think I really needed. I needed to get out of my funk with some good friends, and it worked so well.

I really needed to be in the company of friends I think. I did speak to Kathryn last night, and she sort of said she had a lot on her plate with Uni, and Rockeistefford. Please, how busy can you be in your first week back at Uni. I've been back 5 weeks, and guarantee I am much busier. Blah. Screw her.

I can't be bothered with it all.

David called me today too. S had sms him to tell him I was in a bit of a funk, so he called to ask if I was okay. I ended up talking to him for 3 hours, and it almost felt like old times before we ended the conversation. It felt good.

I just read that apparently the first thing most Britons think of when they wake up is not to make hot steamy love but to make a hot steamy cup of tea. Too funny.

My burn is beginning to look better thankfully. I've been using a salve on it, and it's feeling better too. I just hope it doesn't leave a mark or scar. Hell, it might add character but I doubt it very much.

Do you know today is Friday the 13th, or at least it was. Black Friday.

Anyone want to know the reason why? Well tough if you don't.

Friday the thirteenth is considered the unluckiest of days, unless you were born on Friday the thirteenth. If you were born on this day then Friday the thirteenth is your lucky day.

The origins of Friday superstitions are many. One of the best known is that Eve tempted Adam with the apple on a Friday. Tradition also has it that the Flood in the Bible, the confusion at the Tower of Babel, and the death of Jesus Christ all took place on Friday.

Long before the Bible was written, Friday was considered an important day. Primitive people set aside Fridays as a special time to worship their deities and ask them for good crops, health and happiness. Those who worked on this day were told not to expect "good luck" from the gods.

The day Friday was named after Frigg the Norse goddess of marriage.

Later she was confused with the goddess of love, Freya, who in turn became identified with Friday. When the Norsemen and Germanic tribes became Christians, Freya was supposed to have been banished to the mountains as a witch.

Friday came to be called "witches' Sabbath." For it was believed that on this day, each week, twelve witches and the Devil met - thirteen evil spirits up to no good!

This is just one of the explanations for our superstition about Friday the 13th.

There is also the Christian tradition

The fear of Friday the 13th stems from two separate fears -- the fear of the number 13 and the fear of Fridays. Both fears have deep roots in Western culture, most notably in Christian theology.

Thirteen is significant to Christians because it is the number of people who were present at the Last Supper (Jesus and his 12 apostles). Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th member of the party to arrive.

Christians have traditionally been wary of Fridays because Jesus was crucified on a Friday. Additionally, some theologians hold that Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden fruit on a Friday, and that the Great Flood began on a Friday. In the past, many Christians would never begin any new project or trip on a Friday, fearing they would be doomed from the start.

Sailors were particularly superstitious in this regard, often refusing to ship out on a Friday. According to unverified legend, the British Navy commissioned a ship in the 1800s called H.M.S. Friday, in order to quell the superstition. The navy selected the crew on a Friday, launched the ship on a Friday and even selected a man named James Friday as the ship's captain. Then, one Friday morning, the ship set off on its maiden voyage... and disappeared forever. A similar, entirely factual story is the harrowing flight of Apollo 13.

Some historians suggest the Christian distrust of Fridays is actually linked to the early Catholic Church's overall supression of pagan religions and women. In the Roman calendar, Friday was devoted to Venus, the goddess of love. When Norsemen adapted the calendar, they named the day after Frigg, or Freya, Norse goddesses connected to love and sex. Both of these strong female figures once posed a threat to male-dominated Christianity, the theory goes, so the Christian church vilified the day named after them.

This characterization may also have played a part in the fear of the number 13. It was said that Frigg would often join a coven of witches, normally a group of 12, bringing the total to 13. This idea may have originated with the Christian Church itself; it's impossible to verify the exact origins of most folklore. A similar Christian legend holds that 13 is unholy because it signifies the gathering of 12 witches and the devil.

The number 13 could also have been considered pagan because there are 13 months in the pagan lunar calendar. The lunar calendar also corresponds to the human menstrual cycle, connecting the number to femininity.

Interesting, and not suprising that females are bloody well blamed some how. Not surprising at all.

It's kind of noisy here tonight. I can hear music through the rain, so have switched to the Buffy soundtrack to relax me. I'm also onto my second cup of coffee in an hour. Bad me, but I am thirsty and don't want to sleep yet.

Ack I have so much to do tomorrow, including go see my man play. It's going to be so yucky tomorrow too. Ugh. Never mind.

I'm going to try and to do at least my history readings tomorrow, and start preparing my essay for History. Ack. Freaky. I can't believe I have one assignment due already, and technically another due Wednesday. This semester is going to go through way too quickly.

I want to start on my next history assignment after this one, so it is out the way. Ack! So much to do, so little time.

But I will prevail. I just have to get motivated to do it.

I think Lisa still might be pissed off with me because I didn't go out with her Wednesday night, but oh well not much I can do about that. I'm still annoyed about how she was acting anyway.

I guess that's it for now.
